Community & Regional Resilience Institute (CARRI)
The Community & Regional Resilience Institute (CARRI) was formed to encourage smaller communities to develop plans to recover from catastrophic events – natural or man-made. They are seeking a volunteer risk manager who could work with one of their subcommittees – the Resilience Benefits Work Group. This group is working on the following issues:
- A range of incentives for community resilience – typically framed as risk management – already exist within the insurance industry.
- A key need is to identify and catalogue existing incentives and provide guidance (or “connect the dots”) for public and private community leaders on how to attain them.
- Education and outreach will play a key role in the successful implementation of the CRS -- both in building community leaders’ awareness regarding the benefits of improving community resilience (inherent everyday benefits and long-term economic benefits) and in promoting the benefits of the system among constituents.
- To make the “business case” for community resilience to insurance, banking, and government representatives, the RBWG will need to examine and engage non-traditional as well as conventional investors and assets. There are several innovative approaches that should be explored. Public-private partnerships were highlighted as a promising model
The group meets quarterly, usually by conference call, but sometimes in person in Washington D.C. If any risk manager is interested in serving on this important project, please contact Terry Fleming at 240-777-8911, or terry.fleming@montgomerycountymd.gov.
